I wanted to have an adventure. I thought I would do something spontaneous and crazy and unplanned and because of that my life would change your I’d have crazy fun! The thing is I’ve learned, well I haven’t learned because I’ve made this mistake a few times is when you do something expecting it to be a crazy and spontaneous adventure, nothing really happens cause you’re expecting it to be.
When I did stand up on the road, I’d hover around the waitresses asking what there was to do in the town, hoping they’d say, “Oh, stranger in a foreign place, I’ll show you this town,” but instead what they’d end up doing was nicely drawing a detailed map what was there to do it on my own.
But, back in 1998, I forgot how the lost boy in town failed me so much, and I said, I’m gonna go to Vegas, stay in any hotel walk around the casinos, and maybe someone will recognize me from suddenly Susan or Drew Carrey, or something, and say “hey, hang with us, we’re gonna have fun, gonna drive in a helicopter, come to our party or more hopefully some woman will say “Come on, why are you alone? Hang out with me!”
So, I landed in Vegas, went to the casino, walked around and nothing much happened for hours. I don’t like gambling. I don’t get it, it’s not for me, but then, some guy came up to me, “Oh my God, you're Ray Romano” And I had to explain I wasn’t, and he said, “But you are someone right?”
And I explained who I was, and he sort of knew who I was I think, and he said, “Fred, oh my God, a celebrity, stand with me by the craps table for good luck!”
I said okay, stood by the table, and after he lost four times in a row he said, “Fred, you don’t have to stand here anymore.”
I nodded walked away, went outside, hailed a cab right to the airport and went home.
Fred actually did go back to Vegas when he opened for Norm MacDonald. If you want to hear that crazy story download the audio book! Click the link below to download!
